Human and Canine Pulmonary Blastomycosis, North Carolina, 2001–2002

چکیده
We investigated a cluster of blastomycosis in 8 humans and 4 dogs in a rural North Carolina community. Delayed diagnosis, difficulty isolating Blastomyces dermatitidis in nature, and lack of a sensitive and specific test to assess exposure make outbreaks of this disease difficult to study.

متن کاملEfficacy of voriconazole in treatment of murine pulmonary blastomycosis.
We evaluated the efficacy of voriconazole, a new broad-spectrum triazole antifungal compound, in the treatment of murine pulmonary blastomycosis. Since mice metabolize voriconazole rapidly, we took advantage of our previous observation that administration of grapefruit juice to mice resulted in suitable serum voriconazole concentrations so that treatment studies with mice could be done (A. M. S...
متن کاملClinical and molecular epidemiology of veterinary blastomycosis in Wisconsin
BACKGROUND Several studies have shown that Blastomyces dermatitidis, the etiologic agent of blastomycosis, is a genetically diverse pathogen. Blastomycosis is a significant health issue in humans and other mammals. Veterinary and human isolates matched with epidemiological case data from the same geographic area and time period were used to determine: (i) if differences in genetic diversity and...
متن کاملCanine blastomycosis in Wisconsin: a survey of small-animal veterinary practices.
The disease burden and impact of canine blastomycosis in Wisconsin is uncertain. We surveyed small-animal veterinary practices to obtain estimates of disease incidence, determine patient outcomes, and investigate variation in diagnostic and treatment strategies used by veterinarians. Veterinarians representing small-animal practices in Wisconsin were contacted by mail with the option to complet...
متن کاملBlastomycosis in Ontario, 1994–2003
We describe a case of blastomycosis in an 8-year-old boy with Blastomyces-associated osteomyelitis and possible pulmonary involvement. We also identify 309 cases of blastomycosis in Ontario that were seen during a 10-year period, 57% of which occurred from 2001 to 2003. The overall incidence during the study period was 0.30 cases per 100,000 population. Most patients were from north Ontario (n ...
